Britney is a variant of Brittany. Brittany originates in Latin language and is taken from the word for a region in France, Brittany. According to some sources, it can also refer to Britannia, a Roman goddess. As a feminine given name, Brittany was not used in the United States until the 1970s. The name Britney was popularized by the American singer Britney Spears.
