The name Byrne is actually a shortened form of the very old, aristocratic Irish name O'Byrne, meaning “a male descendent of Bran”, who was the King of Leinster. The name O'Byrne itself is a derivative of O'Broin which means “a male descendent of Broin”, from “bron” which means 'raven'.
