Elvira originates in Germanic languages and means "true stranger". Elvira was the name of the Queen of Sicily in the 12th century and also the Queen of Leon, Spain, in the 11th century. More recently, the name was popularized by Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, a film character played by Cassandra Peterson.
