Garfield is an Old English name and is believed to be a place name, denoting that the bearer came from a place called Garfield. The village has since been lost to time. The place Garfield itself is believed to derive from the word “gar”, which meant 'a spear', or in derivation, 'a triangular bit of land like a spear head'.
