Hypatia originates in Greek language and means "supreme woman". This was the name of an Egyptian philosopher and excellent mathematician, the head of the Platonist school in Alexandria in the 4th century. As a feminine given name Hypatia is very rare and nowadays considered old-fashioned in the United States.
