Isobel is a Scottish variant of Isabel. Isabel originates in Latin language and means "promise of God". Ultimately, it is derived from Elizabeth, originating in Hebrew. Some sources suggest that Isabel is simply a Spanish and Portuguese form of Elizabeth.
