Madonna originates in Italian language and means "lady of mine". Madonna is an expression used in reference to images of the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus. As a feminine given name it was popularized by the American artist Madonna, born Madonna Louise Ciccone. Despite the famous bearer, the name has never gained popularity in the United States.
