Maple originates in English language and is simply taken from the name of a tree renowned for its autumn leaf color. Initially, it was a surname and as a surname it functions until today. In the past, it was sometimes used as a masculine given name, but nowadays it's prevalent as a feminine given name. Maple was also the name of a female character in Robert Frost's poem Maple.
