Marla is a diminutive of Marlene. Marlene originates as a German blend of Maria and Magdalene and thus refers to Mary Magdalene, the Biblical figure. The name was popularized by the German actress and entertainer Marlene Dietrich. Her real name was Maria Magdalene von Losch.
