Originally a male name in Russian language, derived from Greek niketas, which means "triumphant, victorious." It has been used as a female name since the 20th century, in most eastern European countries, however, it remains mainly masculine. Popularized by the French film Nikita by Luc Besson. Also the name of Elton John's song.
