Opal

Derived from the name of a precious gemstone, ultimately derived from the Sanskrit upala, which means "jewel". Opal is the national gemstone of Australia, which is also responsible for 97% of the world's supply. In the Middle Ages people believed opal could bring great luck. It is also the birthstone of October.
