Philomena originates in Greek language and means "strong love". This was the name of a virgin martyr saint of the Catholic Church, a young Greek princess in the 4th century, the patron of children, babies and virgins. As a feminine given name Philomena is rather rare and considered old-fashioned in the United States nowadays.
