Ruby originates in Latin language and is taken from the name of the red gemstone. In English-speaking countries it has been popular since the end of the Victorian era. It can be used as both feminine and masculine names, although its masculine usage is rather rare. Ruby is the birthstone of the month of July and has also been used on multiple occasions in literature and music.
