Saskia originates in Germanic languages and means "Saxon woman", referring to an old Germanic tribe of Saxons. As a feminine given name it has always been more popular in European countries. Some sources suggest it might be a Slavic variant of the name Alexandra. In the United States its usage is rather rare.
