Scarlett originates in English language and is derived from a surname of a person who made or sold clothes made from scarlet. Scarlet as the name of the cloth is ultimately derived from a Persian expression. The most common color of the cloth was carmine red. As a given name it was popularized in Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind, where Scarlett O'Hara was the main character. More recently, American actress Scarlett Johansson is a famous bearer.
