Serena originates in Latin language and means "incredibly calm". This was the name of a Roman saint, as well as the name of an important noblewoman in the Western Roman Empire. As a feminine given name it has been fairly popular in the United States lately, probably popularized by the famous American tennis player Serena Williams, and also the fictional character of Serena van der Woodsen in the TV series Gossip Girl.
