Svante is a Swedish, Danish and Norwegian diminutive of Svantepolk, ultimately derived from Svyatopolk. Svyatopolk originates in Slavic languages and means "celebrating people". It is a typical Russian masculine given name, hardly used in other languages in this form. In the Unites States it is also very rare.
