Tamara originates in Hebrew language and means "palm tree". It is a Russian variant of the Biblican feminine name Tamar. Until today, Tamara remains a very popular name in Slavic languages. In the U.S. it was popular in the 20th century but now it is rather rare. It also means "spice" in Sanskrit.
