Zoya is a Russian variant of Zoe. Zoe originates in Greek language and means "life". As a feminine given name it has been used since the 19th century and nowadays is one of the most popular names for girls. It was the name of two Byzantine Empresses, martyred Saints. The variant spelling Zoey is also very popular in the English-speaking countries.
